to gains that we don't have fiscal cliff agreement and even if we go over the cliff but once a deal is done, don't forget the risk appetite back? and that is irish for gold. >> in the last year whenever we had risk oo gold and silver participated, that would be in a healthy fashion as a small market in very little capital flowing into it we saw some influence in terms of price action. i think you do have macro issues driving concerns in the new year. central banks around the world will continue to print the bank of japan being influenced this next year will throw their hat in the ring along with the bank of england and the fed as the print and try to monetize their way to recovery. ashley: you bring up a good point. people buy gold as a hedge against inflation, but also a safe haven against a crisis. we seem to weather the financial crisis very well. we have this fiscal cliff facing us but if you look at inflation and the safe haven, i don't know, those gold fits the mold for those reasons? >> as an inflation hedge it did not keep up in real-time. more reflected today is sophisticated

to an aide that said house gop caucus meeting is not principally about the fiscal cliff. it's mostly going to be about sandy relief money from the superstorm. the cliff will come up, but the source said we are not going over any potential deal because there isn't one and the senate hasn't acted yet. >> but even if they're intending to talk more about sandy relief, don't you think the fiscal cliff issue is going to kind of come up? >> of course it's going to come up, but my only point is the meeting -- that's not what the meeting is about. it's a further indication that -- from the house of representatives that they don't consider this thing ripe enough that they're going to bolt and move on it tonight. >> that'll please new jersey governor chris christie and governor cuomo of new york. but you don't think that's a head fake to try and lower expectations? or not to raise them needlessly on the fiscal cliff? >> look. >> we sound skeptical, don't we? >> yes. but we're not that far from 5:00. and we're not that far from midnight. knowing the way the senate acts, the fact the senate leaders have not announced a deal. i don't think it's a trech to say that the house at this point is standing back and saying we haven't moved the ball yet.

with the fiscal cliff. the senate majority leader says it is up to the house to pass the senate plan. >> so i say to mr. speaker, take the escape we have left you. put the economic fate of the nation ahead of your own fate as speaker of the house. millions of middle class families are nervously watching, waiting and counting down the moments until our taxes go up. >> senate minority leader mitch mcconnell is expected to take the senate floor a few minutes from now. he has been saying his office has been saying throughout the day when senate democrats offer a plan, republicans will review it. so republicans are very much waiting for democrats to offer a new type of fiscal cliff proposal. democrats are saying to republicans in the house, they should just pass that bill that passed the senate earlier this year, one that extends tax rates for families earning less than $250,000 a year. so very much bit of a stalemate going on here in washington as we move ever closer to the deadline. back to you. ashley: my first reaction is, so what's new? >> not much. ashley: at least it is something.
